Paula Brown Project: Speciation in Myzomela honey-eaters

I’m a class of 2024 student at the University of Rochester, majoring in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. I joined the Uy lab in Fall 2021 to work with postdoc Elsie Shogren on speciation, hybridization, and neo-sex chromosomes in Myzomela honey-eaters, as well as signal divergence and speciation in island flycatchers. In the future, I’m eager to learn more about the computation techniques, benchwork, and field work that are utilized in ecology research.

Ella Croyle Project: Hybrid zone dynamics in Ramphocelus tanagers

Hi! I’m a senior majoring in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and minoring in Sustainability. I joined the Uy lab in Fall 2023 to work with Maria and investigate hybridization in Ramphocelus tanagers using demographic analyses and coalescent modeling. I was born and raised in south Texas, which helped shape my passions for conservation and wildlife, particularly birds. I am excited to learn more about speciation and selection, whether that is through field, molecular, or computational approaches!

Ethan McKone Project: Song evolution in Ramphocelus  tanagers

I am a class of 2024 student at the University of Rochester, majoring in Neuroscience. I joined the Uy lab in Fall 2023 to work with graduate student Maria Castaño on the speciation and hybridization of Flame-Rumped TanagersRamphocelus flammigerus - characterizing acoustic variation of song across hybrid zones. I am eager to learn more about computational techniques and skills in ecological research, and how work in the field translates to work in the lab.
