SIGNAL DIVERGENCE & SPECIATION IN VOLCANO HUMMINGBIRDS

Populations of the volcano hummingbird Selasphorus flammula, endemic to volcano and mountain tops of Costa Rica, have evolved unique gorget colors. This variation ranges from bright iridescent red to duller purple/grey, and may represent the incipient stages of species formation. Like our work on island speciation, we are exploring the factors that mediate gorget color divergence to provide insights into the ecology and genomics of speciation.
